Painting and decorating: the preparation
We can help and advise you on thorough preparation for your painting and decorating project:

-
Helping clear rooms of furniture, furnishings, (taking down curtains, blinds or nets to clear windows), ornaments, wall art and pictures
-
Plus where necessary, removing any shelves (that are easy to remove) - all so that your walls are easier to paint
-
Protecting items and floors with dust sheets - so everything is clean, tidy (and paint fleck free) at the end
-
Stripping old wallpaper. (We 'love' removing woodchip - said no one ever!)
-
Cleaning, filling cracks and holes in walls and ceilings with a ready mixed filler, and woodfilling any woodwork
-
Sanding smooth and sanding all surfaces prior to painting to remove any previous imperfections (such as old paint drips)
-
Sanding (with fine grit sandpaper) also creates a 'key' - for the new paint layer to adhere to
-
Washing ceilings, walls and woodwork with sugar soap to remove any dirt and grease (particularly important in, and rooms near kitchens)
-
Priming, sealing, applying knotting solution to prevent discolouration when painting over new wood
-
Permanently covering marks and stains (e.g. water damage, tobacco discolouring walls and ceilings, wax crayons etc.) using a stain killer blocker
-
Applying mist coat (diluted emulsion) if necessary e.g. for newly plastered or skimmed walls (to prevent the 'full paint coat' from bubbling)
-
Covering cracks and imperfections with plaster repairs, or for whole walls that are in need of some serious smoothing: re-plastering, overboarding (with plasterboard), plaster skim coat, or lining papers might be your best option
-
Using decorators caulk to fill any settlement cracks in new builds, or cracks in older houses in room corners, or where skirting boards/coving/door frames or picture rails etc. meets the walls - to help achieve a professional finish at the end

The actual: painting and decorating work

Yes, there is a 'lot' of planning and prep before we even get to the (fun part) painting, and that is what gets you your great end results:

-
Interior painting and decorating of walls and ceilings
-
Choice of paint finishes from silk (which has more of a sheen) or matt (which is flatter and more forgiving of any imperfections as it doesn't reflect as much). Some say that painting walls and ceilings with matt emulsion is a more modern choice
-
Woodwork can be painted with high gloss (what it says on the tin!), satinwood (mid sheen), or eggshell (again flatter duller finish)
-
Choosing paints that are hard wearing, extra tough, durable or wipeable for high traffic areas such as halls, or kitchens and bathrooms
-
Hanging wallpapers and designer wallpaper (either paste the wall or paste the paper) – for an elegant high-end look to your rooms - that we can help you choose
-
Beautiful feature walls or feature alcoves - with paints or wallpapers - to add interest or create a focal point for an elegant finish
-
Undercoat, gloss/satin/eggshell of woodwork, doors, frames, window, surrounds, any pelmets, and windowsills
-
Where necessary, painting of radiators
-
Staining, painting or varnishing woodwork
-
Painting of kitchen cupboard doors and cupboard doors (we can also add new handles for a completely new look)
-
Painting of furniture, such as tables, chairs, dressing tables, ornate mirror surrounds etc. with furniture paint
-
Exterior painting mostly of first floor level only, single storey extensions, garden rooms and outbuildings. (Masonry painting of brick, concrete block, rendered walls, floor painting, and exterior painting of woodwork, timber buildings and cladding).
-
We also paint outside spaces of gardens; such as walls, rendered raised flower beds, fences and trellises etc. as part of our landscape garden design service

“It’s so neat, everything is so perfect” - Steve, Chapel Allerton - admiring the wallpaper joins

Restoring or adding character and architectural detail as part of our service with addition of:

-
Fitting coving and cornice
-
Ceiling roses
-
(Coving, cornice and ceiling roses would normally be emulsioned with your ceiling, though they could be painted a different colour to stand out and be a feature in their own right)
-
Fixing or repair of picture rail, skirting board, architrave (for door and window detail) - then usually finished by painting with your choice of gloss (or satinwood or eggshell)
-
As part of your painting and decorating service we can also remove old carpets, sand, treat (paint, wood stain or floor varnish) to show off your restored floorboards

Success story: helping a Leeds landlord let their flat in record time

“The Leeds letting agent couldn’t believe it was the same flat… and recommended that I increase the rent due to the standard of work that had been carried out” - Kay, Landlord LS17, when they came in to take new ‘after’ pictures to relist the flat…

Kay, (juggling a full time career, being a new mum, a partner, and a landlord) had limited time to get her recently vacated Leeds flat redecorated and ready for new tenants. (One of twelve in a Yorkshire stone property), the flat is characterful with high ceilings and tall windows with beautiful timber architrave detailing. And the décor needed some urgent improvements (image above).

Why Kay chose Love Your Home Leeds

Kay, had previously used and been consistently impressed by Andrews home improvement services and decorating skills. So knowing the great results, reliability and attention to detail, happily used Love Your Home Leeds as the high-end local painters and decorators.

Andrew saw the massive potential in the flat and - using his many years of painting and decorating experience - advised on getting rid of all the brown wood for a fresh, modern look and to help brighten the flat. For the wall colour scheme, Kay chose greys throughout, with her choice of adding interest with dark green and blue feature walls for the lounge and a bedroom. Kay liked the idea of white woodwork, but was concerned about painting over all the brown varnish, until Andrew suggested a solution.

From day one “Andrew cracked on and painted all the ceilings (entire 2 bedroom flat) emulsioned white in a single day” which was quite impressive.

Kay also spoke with Leeds Dulux Decorator Centre who's decorating experts agreed with Andrew’s suggestion of Zinsser BIN primer. This was meticulously applied by brush, painting all the 10m2 of doors, windows, surrounds, skirtings. This was followed up by applying a white undercoat, and finally painting a white eggshell top coat.

“We had the windows open, and the flat still smelt [horrible] of the Zinsser BIN, but it went away after a few hours, and the planning and preparation effort was well worth it as the newly decorated flat looks brilliant with its new colours and the woodwork in white”.

The flat was let, giving some new tenants a fantastic freshly redecorated home, within days of the letting agent listing the new 'after photos'...
